CHILL PILL:
1 oz lavender bud-infused vodka
1 oz lavender bud syrup
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
lavender water spray or rinse
lavender soda

combine lavender bud-infused vodka, lavender bud syrup, lemon juice and shake over ice. prepare champagne flute with rinse of lavender water, or mist inside of glass with lavender water spray. strain into lavender-misted / lavender-rinsed flute and top with fair amount of lavender soda. stir briefly and serve. garnish with sprig of lavender or purple flower if available.

YES to jay z’s new album blueprint 3. you can SO tell when a musician knows the meaning of music & i don’t really know anyone else at the moment who delivers such important messages so potently. and he’s actually challenging. that’s the best way of telling whether something’s really of substance..if it kind of jolts you as you learn of it. like a good writer. well, like a good anything i guess

it’s weird how everything someone does, if you know them well enough, is a mannerism. sometimes i can’t stand it. sometimes it’s immediately comforting. but, for example, even the sound of pausing and footsteps and breaths or,  a stressed syllable, slight movements, shifting..for some reason I have to brush them off, try not to notice them, like i always have, because you know how they’re laden with maybe hopelessness, or anxiety, or self-pity, and it’s a catharsis, almost trying push their feelings out and into their outer world. and to that you’re just a still life, there to endure it, if that’s how you choose. but i try to disappear from it. it’s really weird trying to avoid this in your mind as you’re around other things ‘happening’ to themselves, so you can just see into them instead, and love them. a bizarre struggle of admiration. i don’t know. everything’s insane.

Excuse the bad quality of the photograph above & be inspired by this woman. I met her a good while ago now, but she ceases to exist in my mind. I used to see her often catching the train to Reading from the town where I lived, as she did everyday, dressed up as a clown to collect money for charity, for a type of cancer fund. The day I met her was very cold and so were the nights she got home after doing this on her own, wheeling around, and reading’s a pretty dangerous place.  Could I take your photo? Yes, as long as you donate some money. And now she’s probably still doing just that.

I admire her because of her altruism, her imagination and the relentless hard work, deep empathy and love shown in her actions. I don’t know why she made me feel sad after this photo, good sad, in a way. Maybe cause I realised many people i knew then rarely let themselves care this deeply about topics outside of their own 9-5 life. I don’t know.

So, I  thought you might, too, like to celebrate her !

No. I mean actually celebrating her. She made me question what it is I’m passionate about and what I might like to do to ‘give’. The more you create and ‘put out’ to the world, the more your inner life is abundant and nourished and you actually do attract more wonderful happenings.

I’m aware of how boring charity seems to our generation, or even condescendingly gimicky-indie, but it should be done in your own personal way. we can do it however we like!)

Suggestions to get your ideas rolling:

• Everyone loves helping a friend..is someone a little bit shy? you could organise a ‘free hugs’ saturday with your mates somewhere public to help them conquer their fear, as a surprise
• I love the idea of Guerrilla gardening..you can be your own independent rebel, going about town with your home-made ‘seed bombs‘ or simply volunteer with a re-vegetation organisation.
• or even if you have a skill such as art, you could brighten up a dull looking place with some awesome graffiti,
• you can also just make posters for your work or school to raise awareness
• You can organise or help set up barbeques, events (know any musicians?) or awesome themed social parties, tacky roller discos with tickets at a set price for donation.

Note – if you don’t feel particularly psyched about helping anything, you’re not that soulless, haha! just do your research! what would be fulfilling to you? how do you feel about issues in the media which are seen as ‘bad’? For example: whaling, chocolate trade slavery, disasters, poverty, malnutrition,  orangutans & palm oil, mental health treatment)…now think locally or just laterally. where is there suffering nearby? I know that people in hospitals would love to have a chat sometimes, it does depend on the person, but it’s often really super helpful because they’re most likely having a pretty horrible time and it feels as boring and mundane as prison.. i promise you. ask the hospital about volunteering for this kind of support, or in old people’s homes. etc.

I’m not saying you should do everything and you’re not already being good enough! Just have a brainstorm and re-think your idea of ‘charity’, and how you might get refueled from everyday by finding something else to have time with and escape from other mandatory responsibilities. If it’s the right thing for you, it will definitely be energising. Think about what you’d feel amazing to help with & which skills you can learn, or use and improve. It would look super good on a CV, anyhow. If you love dressing up, use that! If you love organising parties, use that! Scared of something? Do that. You get the gist.  Even sort out a theme for entertainment/fun value with friends or lovers or family and brainstorm on passions and ideas for carrying out help. It could even be a ridiculous midnight grog-fuelled guerilla gardening mission with balaclavas. There, my friend, you have a pretty twee bonding session, too.

Once you’re really excited by how fun and fulfilling it’ll be, whatever ‘it‘ is you chose to do, make the time and the plan, and get it going. If you can get your friends interested, awesome. Non? Protests and demonstrations are very good to meet people who would be. But don’t just go along with protests to ‘make a point’. You’ll feel the euphoria of being in a place with like-minded, passionate people and being part of a motion, but this won’t  sustain, and you might actually feel pretty drained from it, especially if it’s negatively driven. Take the pro-active, productive road and use your creativity! Be the positive force to make little, but very powerful, changes. I promise you’ll inspire those around you. Some girl might even take your picture when you’re an 80 year old dressed up as a fairy, helping a blind dude cross the street.

Women Who Run With the Wolves: myths and stories of the wild woman archetype

It is rare that I am constantly inspired by a book after reading it. It’s as if the insights you find often fade after a while and the book seems only really relevant and exciting as you read it. This one stands the test of time (in many ways) and the more I experience, the more I gain after reading it. Women who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes is not just inspiring, but a something I keep spilling my heart out about to everyone. She loves dirt, gardens, sex, the nature of life, death, life, women expressing themselves, intuition, water, a healthy body and a robust soul. But I can’t begin to tell you how astonishingly wise this woman is. I had such a strong response that I felt if I ever had the means I would buy a copy for every single woman and girl in the world. That I should sing its goodness out like those preachers shreeek on city corners. There is also a certain eerie magic with how ‘right’ it felt to me by intuition when I picked it up, and in the way it described  the soul as a wolf.

During this time I was freaking out about the hallucination of a ‘wolf soul’ i had that was still amazing me. yes. I hallucinated a ‘wolf’ as part of my person/spirit/mind or whatever the hell you wanna call it, think what you will, during a bit of a hairy time in hospital. It felt as if it usually stayed underwater until the time I was ill. The book’s allusion to wildness, soul and the wolf startled me with its very accurate description of how I hallucinated it, which was weird. I’ve always been interested in the essence of wise, true-natured women and ancient feminine divine, though. and who doesn’t love gritty fairytales?

How the Book does this

Estes analyses with a hearty warmth for the ‘bare bones’ of stories, meaning the soul of the stories and their original, ancient messages for women (and sometimes men). These have often become lost over time and through development of civilisation and re-shaping of newer religions and other influencing contexts. I felt like she covered everything, and more than I knew I wanted to learn, or knew that I wanted the answers to. It’s very surprising how much worthwhile dilemmas you can wonder about without addressing them.

Estes writes in a casual, lively style, full of good humor. This is not a dry, analytical, passionless discussion, and you will not find one ounce of psychobabble anywhere. As one friend of mine exclaimed, “This woman talks like me!” As I read, I found myself laughing, crying, and nodding my head in agreement. It sparked such a sense of longing I felt my heart would burst at times–something deep in my bones woke up, stretched and sniffed the breeze. I remembered what it was like to be alive in this way, and I saw how “civilized” I had become. Just as pictures can tell a thousand words, I’d like to quote a little tale Estes learned from her late Uncle Vilmos which will clearly show what happens in this civilization process:

“A man came to a szabo, tailor, and tried on a suit. As he stood before the mirror, he noticed the vest was a little uneven at the bottom.

‘Oh,’ said the tailor, ‘don’t worry about that. Just hold the shorter end down with your left hand and no one will ever notice.’

While the customer proceeded to do this, he noticed that the lapel of the jacket curled up instead of lying flat.

‘Oh that?’ said the tailor. ‘That’s nothing. Just turn your head a little and hold it down with your chin.’

The customer complied, and as he did, he noticed that the inseam of the pants was a little short and he felt that the rise was a bit too tight.

‘Oh, don’t worry about that,’ said the tailor. ‘Just pull the inseam down with your right hand, and everything will be perfect.’ The customer agreed and purchased the suit.

The next day he wore his new suit with all the accompanying hand and chin ‘alterations.’ As he limped through the park with his chin holding down his lapel, one hand tugging at the vest, the other hand grasping his crotch, two old men stopped playing checkers to watch him stagger by.

‘M’Isten, oh, my God!’ said the first man. ‘Look at that poor crippled man!’

The second man reflected for a moment, then murmured, ‘Igen, yes, the crippling is too bad, but you know I wonder…where did he get such a nice suit?’”

Just like the man with the new suit, we often develop personas that display to everyone how good, caring, nice, etc., we are. To the outside world everything is perfect, but inside our true natures are crippled. Women often get so much support for these pleasing personas, we lose touch with how much they narrow our choices, cut us off from life, and bring us unnecessary pain. Women Who Run with the Wolves helps us see that we have become like the tailor’s gullible customer. Perhaps we have been hobbling around in our fancy suits for so long we have forgotten we weren’t always a cripple.

Estes’ book will show you where you have lost touch with your heart, your guts, your creativity, your wildness–your life! The stories she presents, and her insightful analysis of those stories, will gently lead you back to yourself. Even if you are unmoved by this review, I would ask you to run to the nearest bookstore and read the introduction. Let Estes’ own words touch you. This is one of those powerful books that, if you are ready for it, it will call you.

I felt so in awe with reading Clarissa Estes that I researched(read: ‘googled’) the text, and it turned out her book was a New York Times Bestseller and that Alice Walker (one of my faaavourite writers, of The Color Purple, like, everr) says,

‘Women Who Run With the Wolves isn’t just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from La Que Sabee – One Who Knows’.

Flicking through Sabrina Ward Harrison’s book..I discovered suddenly a minimalist white page with only ONE message ‘You Must read Women Who Run With the Wolves’ and I went crazy, because I find Harrison’s artwork and collage sacred being scarily relatable, intimate and honest. Reading the text itself felt like a very important thing to do once I started. Every paragraph is disillusionment and discovery, so very abundant and leads to a lot of brainstorming. It’s an epic, wonderful read. It might even still be collecting dust on you mum’s bookshelf!

Criticisms to address

It could be critiqued as unpractical, and not telling us ‘what to actually do’, or even that it’s vague. I never got that impression. I was really surprised by this response, but realised what was meant. For me, there were often moments of..’oh god, i don’t know! i’ll have to work that one out.’ because it challenged me in so many ways it takes a lot of actual mind-work, yet it can just sink into your mind and feels very healing & therapeutic. Most importantly,this is not a self-help book. It’s not a’ for this time, this girl, this society, this class, this lifestyle’ deal. On the contrary. Arguably, Estes says that circumstances are nothing compared to will and intention through Gnosis (self-knowing). Her purpose is to reveal and sing the innate feminine, ancient knowledge women had recently suppressed a lot in the time, and before book was written. It’s a book of inductive truth and nature. The old..’i can only point you to the door’ analogy works here.

The messages she so potently expresses were enough, more than enough, for me. My decisions and self-trust already strengthened by her analysis of story and access to ancient/worldly female truth has been very very ‘helpful’ and maturing.  My empathy and intuition feel even more alive than ever. I don’t need someone to hold my hand or play out my life for me with puppet strings, this isn’t the point of the text. The point is the opposite. Be the wanderer, trust yourself and know what you actually want and challenge yourself with your ideals, and it’s gonna be hard work!! – “Save Yourself!”  – shouts Mr. Bukowski! Thank you, Mr. Bukowski. Phew. Anyhow, she is very good at the direction she gives and is in no way ‘vague’. A lot of readers seem to describe how it ‘stews’ in your mind after reading it for a long time. In this way it’s very unique. Your mind really has to get used to revealed, raw truths and digest wonderful, unbelievably important messages of a woman’s entire life and universe.

I’m so happy it was bestseller but scared that this profound text might be lost on our generation, and god knows we need it. We still crave that push of feminism(the dirty word) for the importance of healthy, flourishing, women in society.

Buy the book, whatever you do! It has to be on the top of your priorities, no matter where you are at right now. It’s really vital and we’re so so so lucky this brilliant poet, scholar, analyst, therapist, gardener and mother put so much work into this subject.

I hope you guys rub some pennies together and order it right now, you wonderful things! go go GO!

ALSO i’ve found the best way to ‘not take yourself too seriously’ is by going against your ideals/habits/morals and being subversive to what you think is your character, even if it’s just in the slightest thing each day or you could brainstorm on ideas you wouldn’t usually carry out. people try to be subversive and independent of their own culture, which is awesome, but it’s not really working if you’re a slave to your own chosen lifestyle. even if it’s in new words you use, clothes you won’t wear, skills you learn that your not expected to. that’s the point. know that the next day can be allowed to be more adventurous if you can’t even predict what you’ll want to be tomorrow. also, this way you abandon the lazy ease of accidentally becoming some typical ‘good’ if you live out with contradictions and impulses and messiness for something heavenly.

it’s the most fun in the world if you can get into the hang of challenging yourself. & hilarious

I’ve been thinking a lot about sensory indulgence, recently. people have always loved putting on a show and setting up an environment ..think of all your favourite smells, textures, activities, tastes, music, images, films..etc (and if you’re not overly excited by them think about it then find the hell out what you like!) & they can often be medicinal with themes and phases..if you feel like you’re in limbo and need lightness and purity there’ll be certain shared ‘elements’ through these that you can change your environment give you even keel. Fo Example: ! :

sometimes need overdoses of…

varying whites together,  only very minimalist noises or sounds or drones or piano, walking walking walking, early hours, lots of water and maybe lost in translation in the background and often (typically) japanese food, lots of clean tasting tea and breathing..sometimes i crave dancing and red and cooking and love with rich tastes, laughing, golden coloured scents and hip hop, rumi and having paint on my hands really EATING and wine wine wine. some things consistently help me..like lillies. sometimes we need to be ridiculous, even superficial, and flamboyant but that needs someone who knows you superwell like abby(AMAZEBRAIN), & ylang ylang burning in the background with orgasmic opera, shoooess and wigs, bach remedies and flower flavoured cake/tea/everything, feeling mad hatterish and reading funny e.e cummings and silly haikus like..

why style is an ugly word for a wonderful thing

- i think that what you wear is important, for you. It’s ridiculous to pretend you don’t have any persona in your outer world, you just do. so why not make it easier for your dreaming, messy imagination to thrive in your upper world by wearing it on your sleeve?  aw i wanna start making clothes man. thing is, if you don’t cherish what it is you do, & very much dressing yourself, if you don’t feed magic into your movements, then why are you getting changed? how do you want to live?

i just know that the more i stoke my passion for meaning, gnosis, beauty, art..the more heavenly the world becomes. i think style is, very ironically, the soul.

The Journey 

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do –
determined to save
the only life you could save.
